Structural Adhesives research & development answers the need of international industrial consortium

27-04-2020
Privileging the transfer of technology to industrial partners, INEGI has formed a consortium that allows companies to closely follow the advanced research and development work that the Institute has been carrying out in the area of structural adhesive bonding.

The aim is to ensure that research meets industrial needs, and to accelerate access to results, knowledge and newly developed equipment. Safran, Deere & Company, Infineon Technologies, and Kobe Steel are some of the companies that are already part of the initiative, which is open to new members.

INEGI’S TEAM WANTS TO ACCELERATE MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF ADHESIVES

The consortium is currently focusing on creating an integrated adhesive characterization tool. "A single device, capable of analyzing samples under various conditions with a single test", explains Lucas da Silva, responsible for the Advanced Bonding Processes area at INEGI and coordinator of the consortium.

The aim is to accelerate the implementation of adhesive bonds in products and in the production process. "The complete mechanical characterization of the adhesive requires, as a rule, four different samples, four test procedures, and four data reduction procedures. It is a time-consuming and high-cost task, which we intend to reduce as much as possible," says the coordinator.

Currently in development, the technology may also support quality control on assembly lines, as an agile method for early failure detection. A versatility that "promises to make this equipment an important tool in several sectors, from adhesive manufacturers, car manufacturers, aerospace, packaging, or electronics," he says.

Another advantage will be the “creation of cohesive zone models, that is, the laws that dictate the adhesives useful life”, he adds. An important step not only to predict component failure, but also to better understand how to avoid it.

STRUCTURAL ADHESIVES CONTRIBUTE TO THE CREATION OF LIGHTER AND MORE EFFICIENT PRODUCTS

Structural adhesives are glues that guarantee a low weight, resistant fixation, adaptable to complex geometries and different materials. Using the term glue may suggest a simple process, but these adhesives are actually the subject of a complex area of industrial engineering, which aims to form connections capable of withstanding high loads.

This method of fixation was born from the need to obtain joints with better performance, and came to solve problems associated with traditional techniques, such as welding, riveting or screwing. It is increasingly used in various industries, from construction to the automotive and aerospace sectors, which benefit from the ability to create lighter and, consequently, more efficient products.

Unlike traditional techniques, however, the behavior of structural adhesives depends on more variables, such as their composition, the load they are subjected to, or the surrounding temperature. While still an emerging technology however, its study is essential.

In this sense, INEGI’s team has been developing comprehensive skills in the field of mechanical characterization of adhesives, especially in terms of performance and fracture, modeling of adhesive joints with analytical models and finite element analysis, and experimental tests. Competencies that add value to companies, now in a logic of even greater proximity.
