INEGI helps minimize the risk of injury in elite athletes with innovative equipment

23-04-2020
Promote the high physical performance of athletes and reduce the risk of neuromuscular injury - these were the objectives of the challenge posed by the company NeuroExcellence to INEGI, leading the institute to design and build na equipment that activates the neuromuscular system. The solution, designed for elite athletes, is already being commercialized.

It’s a vibrating platform that stimulates and improves the musculoskeletal structure of the user. Greater strength, flexibility, increased intramuscular temperature, and increased neuromuscular coordination are some of its effects, thus resulting in performance optimization, injury prevention and recovery

According to José Santos, a biomedical scientist at NeuroExcellence, "studies carried out with athletes point to the effectiveness of vibration as an important stimulus for musculoskeletal structures". "The state of the art also indicates that after 9 to 10 days of training with vibration there are significant improvements in the power and vertical jump of the athletes. After 12 weeks, the strength gains of the muscle groups at the level of the lower train, equal those achieved during conventional training, with even better results in CMJ (counter movement jump)", he says.

Based on the challenge presented by the companys development team and the ell-known benefits of this type of training, INEGI’s team “conceived the design, mechanical project and the control system of the equipment”, says Emanuel Lourenço, responsible for the project at the Institute. Once the concept was validated, the team built “a functional prototype to carry out tests and trials, and to measure and validate the dynamic performance of the device”.

The end result is a device that “integrates a system driven by two motors, which works with two amplitudes of vibration and multiple frequencies, enabling the introduction of stimulus variability, which is quite rich for the neuromuscular system”, adds Philippe Pereira, responsible for the development of this system at INEGI.

Advantages that are already being experienced by athletes in a real context. The NeuroExcellence representative also adds that the platform "has already been tested by a team from the first national league, as well as by physical trainers with experience in different professional reference leagues".

The partnership between INEGI and NeuroExcellence was born from the desire of this company, specialized in the development of products for the assessment, rehabilitation and performance improvement of athletes, to expand its product range.

In addition to this vibrating platform, there are other equipment being developed with the specialized support of INEGI. Together they will contribute so that the company is able to create new opportunities for entry into markets related to sport and health yet to be explored.
