5 419 is the total number of protective visors that, in less than a month, were designed, produced and distributed to hospitals, health centers, care homes, and other similar institutions.
A action possible thanks to a
collaboration network that integrates INEGI, together with LAETA - Associated Laboratory of Energy, Transport and Aeronautics, the University of Porto (UPorto), the Faculty of Engineering of UPorto (FEUP), the Polytechnic Institute do Porto (IPP), Instituto Superior de Engenharia (ISEP), INESC-TEC - Institute of Systems and Computers Engineering, Technology and Science, Mechanical Engineering students from FEUP and ISEP, and also several professionals and companies . Of these, we highlight the contributions of OLI - Sistemas Sanitarios, which industrialized the production process of visors, enabling an exponential growth in production (around 3000 to date) and Filkemp SA, which donated the filament used in the production of visors by printing 3D.
In addition to the industrial dimension, this voluntary production line involved the mobilization of more than 120 3D printers, the collection of about 32 thousand acetate, and 140 kg of filament. Elements that made it possible to produce visors, essential equipment to protect the users eyes, mouth and face and
reduce the likelihood of contagion.
Among the
beneficiaries are several hospitals, including the Centro Hospitalar Gaia / Espinho, Porto, São João, Pedro Hispano, Braga Hospital, and IPO.
Local health units, fire brigades, social solidarity associations, and nursing homes also received this equipment, distributed in coordination with the Northern Regional Health Administration (ARN Norte).
Taking advantage of the experience in 3D printing (also known as additive manufacturing),
INEGI joined this solidarity mission to help health professionals in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
