One of the most prestigious international awards in the field of Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering – ‘Amelia Earhart Fellowship’ 2018-2019 - was won by Carolina Furtado an INEGI’s researcher and student of the Doctoral Program in Mechanical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).
The Amelia Earhart prize is exclusively awarded to women with an exceptional academic background, who are working in the field of Aerospace and Aeronautics Engineering. 30 doctoral students of any nationality have received this distinction each year. Carolina Furtado said that this achievement was a “recognition of my academic career and a compliment to the Schools where I studied, to my Professors and to all the colleagues with whom I had the privilege of working”. She adds that it is “the assertion that my doctoral project is relevant and has a great interest in the industry. That pleased me enormously”.
The work that has developed in the scope of the doctoral thesis was determinant for Catarina Furtado to be distinguished with this prize. Inserted in an MIT-Portugal research project titled Introduction of Technologies Based on Advanced Materials in the Mobility Industries (IAMAT), her thesis is oriented towards the development of new composite materials, using ultra-fine laminates and nano- carbon tubes, which have proved to be of great interest to the aeronautical industry.
